Hot music planned at bluegrass festival

Hot music planned at bluegrass festivalHot food and even hotter music will be on the menu during the second annual Chili Cook-off and Bluegrass Festival at the Alamo Mission Museum on Saturday, April 25.
The Lonesome Prairie Bluegrass band will make a return visit to the festival. A crowd favorite in 2008, the band performed for the more than 160 people who attended the event. Members of the Alamo Mission Museum’s board are anticipating increased attendance this year.See the April 9 edition of the Optic-Herald for more information.

Easter services set at Hilltip Baptist Church

Hilltop Baptist Church will have an Easter service at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 12 at the church.
Following the services a potluck lunch will be served and a Easter egg hunt will be provided for the children. The church is located at 822 Leftwich St.

Key Club Bake-off entries sought

Advance entries are being sought for the sixth annual  Spring Bake-Off sponsored by the Key Club. The event, set in conjunction with the annual  Cypress SpringFest, will be Saturday, April 18. Registration cost is $10 for each category.

Champions recognized during Opening Ceremonies for youth ball leagueThree 2008 Franklin County Baseball Association District Championship teams were recognized at the 2009 opening ceremonies for the organization on Friday, April 3 at Lindley Field.

“Newcomers” event Tuesday, April 14

The quarterly Newcomers and Friends Coffee is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Bankhead Highway Visitors Center (Thruston House). A one-hour town tour will follow the coffee at 3 p.m.See the April 9 edition of the Optic-Herald for more information.

Lake Cypress Springs Baptist Church to conduct fund raiser and Easter activities

The Lake Cypress Springs Baptist Church is having a brisket and baked goods fund-raiser on Saturday, April 11 at the church. The event will start at 8 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. An Easter egg hunt will be conducted at 2 p.m.

Community clean-up efforts continue

Community clean-up efforts continueThe Beautification Coalition is sponsoring a special public area clean-up of parks and roadsides inside the City of Mount Vernon.
The City of Mount Vernon’s curbside pick-up of large items collected more than 10 tons of material. For more information, see the April 9 edition of the Optic-Herald.

Easter in the Park is Saturday, April 11

The annual Easter in the Park event is Saturday, April 11, beginning at 9:30 a.m. outside Tiger Stadium, off Hwy. 37 South in Mount Vernon.
The annual event will kick-off with the Easter Parade full of  miniature floats, bicycles, and wagons.
Other games and activities will be provided throughout  the event for children of all ages. The annual sack race will be at 10 a.m. followed by the Easter Egg Hunt at 10:30 a.m. Over 2,000 eggs will be hidden for children to find.
Kids Unders Construction Day Care will sponsor a moon walk at the event this year as a representation of the Week of the Young Child which supports the education of preschool children.
