Liberty Cemetery Memorial Day set

The annual Memorial Day service at the Liberty Cemetery will be at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 25, 2017. The event will begin with a business meeting followed by a program presented by the James and Vicki Anderson.

Library friends to provide magic show

The Friends of the Franklin County Library will present a magic show featuring James Wand. The show will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 23 in the gym at the First Baptist Church.

Annual Turtle Derby planned

The 11th annual Turtle Derby has been set for Saturday, July 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Alamo Mission Museum. A variety of awards will be presented in conjunction with the Turtle Derby events.

The Alzheimer Support Group for the Mount Vernon area will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at the Franklin County Library on the square.

Jacksonville princess

Whitney AshleyWhitney Ashley, a fifth grade student at Mount Vernon Intermediate School and 10 year old daughter of Courtney Ashley of Franklin County, was recently crowned at the Miss Rodeo Jacksonville 2017 Princess.

Season winding down for locally grown blueberries

Deanna, Luke, and Richard Newcombe show one of the pans  of blueberries they picked in just a few minutes at their farm.Freshly grown, pesticide free blueberries make for a sweet treat as summer begins, but the growing season for the local berries is rapidly coming to an end, according to the Newcombe family whose farm is just east of town.
