Foster children in need of angels, too

The Franklin County Child Welfare Board reminds citizens that Franklin County children in foster care should have gifts at Christmas, too. The Board currently has 18 local children in foster care.

Chili competition sign ups underway

Registration for the sixth annual chili cook off as part of the annual Christmas Festival on Saturday, December 6 in downtown Mount Vernon is underway.The competition will be conducted on Kaufman St, between Main and Scott streets.

Christmas parade set, vendor booths available

Halloween is over, Thanksgiving is around the corner, and planning for the annual Christmas parade has commenced. The date has been set for Saturday, December 6 with the parade beginning at 11 a.m.

Angels need adoption

Donations of new unwrapped toys are needed for the Angel Gifts portion of the Christmas for All program. Gift items can dropped off at the Mount Vernon Elementary School office or at Angel Tree locations.

Thanksgiving dinner set at Veterans of Foreign Wars

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3992 will be hosts for a community Thanksgiving Dinner Saturday, November 22.  Serving begins at 6:30 p.m. at the post hall on FM 3122, just west of FM 3007.

Monday is deadline for Optic for holiday

The deadline for news and advertising will be at noon on Monday, November 24 so that the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald can publish early in order for the papers to be in the mail before the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Members of the American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary, Post 243 will be hosts for a community Thanksgiving Dinner Friday, November 21.

Veterans groups to serve early Thanksgiving dinners

Local veterans organizations will be hosts for community Thanksgiving dinners this weekend. Members of  the American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary for Post 243 will be hosts for a dinner at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, November 21 at the post hall on CR SE4265, south off FM 21.
