Ragball organizers gear up for tourney

Local organizers are gearing up for the Creek of Dreams Ragball Tournament to help fund improvements at Little Creek Park. All tournament games will be at the park Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14. See the May 8 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more information.

Franklin County behind on rainfall accumulation

Franklin County continues to be well below the norm for rainfall in 2014. During April, the county received 4.34 inches of rain, which brought the year-to-date total to 9.64 inches.

Meadow Park accepting tornado victim donations

Members of the Meadow Park Baptist Church will be accepting donations for the victims of the Arkansas tornado's. Many homes and businesses were destroyed this week, and many people lost everything.

The May 10 Second Saturday will be a busy time around the plaza in downtown Mount Vernon. The day is sure to be filled with good food and things to see and do.

Fairview homecoming planned for May 4

The annual homecoming service at the Fairview Cemetery in northern Franklin County will be on Sunday, May 4. A business meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. The annual memorial service will be at 11 a.m. with a devotional and special music.

Rockhill reunion set third Saturday

Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 17 for the  Rockhill Homecoming and Cemetery Association’s annual meeting. The event will be on the grounds of the cemetery with people gathering around 10 a.m.

Cinco de Mayo festival Sunday

The local celebration of Cinco de Mayo will be Sunday, May 4 at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. The activities for the May 4 celebration will begin with a bilingual mass at 10:30 a.m.

Safety campaign urges drivers to “Look twice for Motorcycles”

In an effort to reverse a five-percent year-over-year increase in motorcycle crash fatalities, the Texas Department of Transportation is launching its month-long “Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles” campaign.
