Season winding down for locally grown blueberries

Deanna, Luke, and Richard Newcombe show one of the pans of blueberries they picked in just a few minutes at their farm.Freshly grown, pesticide free blueberries make for a sweet treat as summer begins, but the growing season for the local berries is rapidly coming to an end, according to the Newcombe family whose farm is just east of town.

The family anticipates that they will have berries for just a few more weeks. Visitors to the farmers market downtown may have noticed Luke Newcombe at his post just about every Saturday this spring selling the home grown blueberries. For more about the farm and its history, see the June 8 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.
