MVISD retirees

Rita Long and Cathy DealRita Long and Cathy Deal were celebrated with a retirement reception in the high school library on Tuesday, May17. Mrs. Long served 24 years at Mount Vernon ISD, and Mrs. Deal taught 10 years in Mount Vernon and 22 years at other districts.

Nursing graduates

Sarah ShurbetSarah Shurbet graduated from the University of Houston’s College of Optometry May 14. She earned a doctor of optometry degree.

Anglers headed for State tourney

Members of the five Franklin County High School Bass Fishing teamsFive teams from the Franklin County Bass Fishing team earned the right to advance to the State High School Fishing tournament next month. The teams finished in the top 87 teams at the Regional tournament on May 21 at Lake Sam Rayburn.

Students honored at Rotary Academic Banquet

Rotary Academic Award winnersScholarships totaling almost $114,000 were awarded at the 31st annual Rotary Academic Banquet in the main school cafeteria on Monday, May 16. Three locals earn bachelor degrees

Three local area residents were among the 1,005 candidates recognized at University of Texas - Tyler’s Spring 2016 Commencement ceremonies conducted Thursday and Friday, May 6 and 7 at the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center.

Third dual language program meeting planned Monday May, 23

A third chance to attend a mandatory meeting for parents interested in enrolling their Kindergarten age children in the Dual Language Two Way program will be at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 23 in the elementary cafeteria.
