Farmers Market gets its state certification

Organizers of the Mount Vernon Farmers Market have received notification that the local market has been certified by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
“The state certification was one of our goals for our organization before we kicked off the 2009 season,” Willie Bane, organizer, noted.

Water district calls for May elections

The Board of Directors for the Franklin County Water District called for an election to fill two seats during their Feb. 17 regular meeting.
The FCWD will join both the City of Mount Vernon and the Mount Vernon Independent School District, which are also conducting elections on Saturday, May 9.

Richard L. “Dick” Alexander was appointed to serve as Chief Deputy Sheriff by Franklin County Sheriff Paul Fletcher. He assumed duties of the office Wednesday, Feb. 18. For further information, see the Feb. 26 edition of the Optic-Herald.

Two requests from Sheriff Paul Fletcher were tabled in the Monday, Feb. 23 meeting of the Franklin County Commissioners Court.

County wants paying heads put in beds at local jail

Empty beds at the county jail continue to concern Franklin County Commissioners, a worry accentuated by having to move $100,000 from the general fund to pay the jail debt. Out-of-county prisoners were supposed to cover the debt, but that source of income virtually dried up on Jan. 1, when the existing agreements expired.
