The eighth annual “Unity March” in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day will be Monday, Jan. 19. The traditional formal program will be conducted at Mission Manor Nursing Home later in the day.

Weaver Baptist Church honored their pastor on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of his ordination Sunday, Dec. 7. Tom Friday and his wife, Julie, were surprised with a “this is your life” celebration by members of the church.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Juancosek at 329 County Road SE4226 was destroyed by a mid-day fire Sunday, Jan. 11. The couple had moved into the home, a log cabin, the weekend of Jan. 2-4.

Corgan Associates of Dallas was chosen as the architect that will design the new elementary school for Mount Vernon during the regular Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, Jan. 6 at Mount Vernon High School.

Several counterfeit $100 bills were passed in Mount Vernon on Thursday, Jan. 8. According to Mount Vernon Police Sgt. Tyler Banister, individuals have been disguising $5 bills as $100 bills. They are not being discovered in a cursory inspection.
