Tree nesting ducks hold court in town

Tree nesting ducks hold court in townThey’re back!
Those strange flying creatures who occupy the trees around the courthouse have returned to their roosts. Yep. You guessed it. Those tree nesting ducks have come back to their nests in Mount Vernon.
Early each morning, the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks can be seen in the various trees they occupy around town. They are not picky. They nest in the oaks, the elms, any tree that provides a spot to cradle their nest.
It was interesting to note that there was a pair of ducks in each tree around the Franklin County Courthouse area, but none were in the pecan tree on the front lawn.
There has been a pair of ducks in the tree outside the old district clerk’s office on the northwest corner of the building for many years.
“They were there 20 years ago when I was in high school and worked for County Clerk Wanda Johnson,” said Municipal Judge Kathy Lovier. See the May 6 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more information about these ducks.
