The City of Mount Vernon, in cooperation with the Mount Vernon Independent School District, will receive $399,110 for the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) project. Texas Transportation Commission approved 200 new federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) projects. This represents approximately $54.1 million in funding to be used by local communities. It is for educational programs and infrastructure improvements that make it safer for Texas children to walk or bike to school. The local program requested almost $496,000 for the project. Leaving about $100,000 to be trimmed from the plan. Designed to make bicycling and walking to school a safe transportation option, the awards are 100 percent federally-funded. The City of Mount Vernon provided the $5,000 engineering plan for the project. See the June 3 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for details on where the sidewalks will be created.
