The City of Mount Vernon hopes to slay the “property tax dragon” as it begins to make an effort to reduce its more than 70 cents per $100 rate over the coming years.
“The city cannot hope to encourage development and increase its ability to improve and expand infrastructure without reducing the tax,” Lee Elliott, administrator for the City of Mount Vernon told members of the Franklin County Industrial Foundation at their quarterly meeting. How will they lower the tax rate? Mr. Elliott outlined a three step plan being implemented by the city: be less tax and more fee reliant; use the fees to lower the tax rate; and encourage more investment.
