Mount Vernon was designated a Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry by the Arbor Day Foundation.
This is the first time for the city to earn this national recognition.
“We commend Mount Vernon’s elected officials, volunteers and its citizens for providing vital care for its urban forest,” John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation, said.
Only two other area cities are currently listed on the foundation’s website as holding the recognition, Greenville and Tyler. Mount Vernon has met the four standards to become recognized. For more information, see the April 21 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.
