Future high speed broadband service for Mount Vernon was the topic of a special meeting in the Board Room of First National Bank Tuesday, June 28. Robbie Allen, General Manager of Peoples Telephone, and Steven Steele, Assistant General Manager, met with members of the Industrial Foundation and civic leaders. Mr. Steele spoke on behalf of the cooperative, which was selected to lay the backbone for the service by a federally funded grant program. This project is part of the National Broadband Plan that was funded with the economic stimulus money appropriated by Congress in February 2009. Local companies applied for the Federal grant money to lay the fiber optic cable and provide the high speed broadband service. Peoples Telephone was awarded the grant for this part of Texas. For details about the plan, see the July 7 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.
