The Texas Historical Commission (THC) last Thursday contracted with the Austin consulting firm of Hardy-Heck-Moore to begin surveying the Texas route of the coast-to-coast Bankhead Highway, established in 1916. A portion of the original route is Mount Vernon’s Main Street (Hwy. 67), then CR NW1010 west of Hwy. 37 and rejoins the current Hwy. 67 near Big Creek. For more information, see the Aug. 23 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.
