FFA attends convention

The Mount Vernon FFA Chapter officers were recognized at the 81st annual Texas FFA Convention in Dallas July 7-10 for their efforts in collecting canned food items for the Dallas County Food Bank. For more information, see the July 16 edition of the Optic-Herald.

Dirt work began at the site of the new elementary building on Monday, July 13. Fencing should be erected around the area in coming week.

Givney, James attend East Texas Rural Electric Youth Seminar

Morgan Givney and Katelyn James of Franklin County were among the 10 youth delegates to attend the 2009 East Texas Rural Electric Youth Seminar (ETREYS). The seminar, sponsored by Wood County Electric Cooperative, Inc. (WCEC), was conducted at Lon Morris College in Jacksonville June 22-26.  See the July 9 edition of the Optic-Herald for more information.

Nance completes basic training

Army Spec. David B. Nance has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. He is the son of Jesse and Debbie Nance of Mount Vernon. He graduated in 2004 from Mount Vernon High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 2008 from Southern Arkansas University in  Magnolia, Ark.
