In the 28 years the Dot and Catfish Smith scholarship has been awarded to 56 students, almost $400,000 has been provided to graduating Mount Vernon students. The scholarship committee is now asking for assistance from the community to bolster the scholarship trust.See the rest of the story in the June 11 edition of the Optic-Herald.
Summer Reading starts Tuesday

Board begins superintendent replacement process
Members of the Mount Vernon school board took the first step in the process of replacing Superintendent Rick Flanagan in a special called meeting on Thursday, June 4. The board unanimously voted to utilize the services of the Texas Association of School Boards as the search team for their next superintendent. Locals graduate from Austin College
Four local area students received their diplomas from Austin College President Oscar C. Page during the 2009 Commencement Ceremonies earlier this month.
