Local agricultural students were honored during the annual FFA banquet on Monday, May 11 in the school cafeteria. Haley Cates was presented the Charles Stretcher Award, and Chris Buck received the Blue and Gold Award. See the May 14 edition of the Optic-Herald for a listing of awards received.

Jordan Mayes and Wendy Alvarez were named Mount Vernon High School Prom King and Queen for the 2009 year. The theme for this year’s event was Eternal Elegance.

The junior varsity cheerleader squads for the 2009-10 school year was recently announced. Members of the junior varsity cheer squad are Chelsea Applegate, Dominick Araiza, Shelby Cannaday, Malori Carr, Deidra Case, Haley Golden, Tedi Griffith, Jesi Hines, Elizabeth Linseisen, Kalynn Reeves, Torri Torres, Katon Trantham, and Summer Weatherford.
Destiny Bell will serve as the junior varsity mascot and captains for the squad are Chelsea Applegate, Elizabeth Linseisen, and Katon Trantham.

The varsity cheerleader squad for the 2009-10 school year was recently announced. Varsity cheerleaders for next year are Abby  Baze, Tricia Cox, Morgan Givney, Chelsey Huizinga, Paige Hymer, Brittany Johnson, Stacee Mardis, Macie Rains, Danelle Rutledge, Grace Treider, and Meghan White. Baily Hunnicutt will be the varsity mascot and Ashley Stahle is the squad manager.
