David Maxton addresses school board members about the agricultural program.David Maxton, and supporters for the MVISD agricultural program lobbied members of the Mount Vernon School Board to consider back filling the third ag teacher position when Becky Hunnicutt retires next month.

Approximately 20 supporters filled the seats at the board meeting. Michael Garrett and Jeff Foster spoke during the open forum for public comments in support of retaining three positions for the department. A presentation by David Maxton was listed as an item on the agenda. Mr. Maxton reminded board members there has been three ag teachers since 1980 and that the department has diversified as times have changed. “The agricultural department is no longer just cows and plows, but skills that are used for employability and social skills to keep this community strong,” Mr. Maxton said. See the April 14 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more information about this request and others presented during the meeting.
