Selma Banman and Irene Binion will be inducted into the Mount Vernon School District’s League of Honor during a special ceremony at halftime of the Mount Vernon vs. Winnsboro football game on Friday, Sept. 16.
Irene Binion inspired innumerable students during her years as an English and Spanish teacher at Mount Vernon. She began teaching at the age of 16 and continued for 48 years. She joined Mount Vernon schools in 1942 and retired in 1969.
Mount Vernon ISD did not have a school nurse until 1969. Selma Banman became the first full time nurse for the district after her husband, Merlin, was transferred from Kansas to Mount Vernon to start Kinder Manufacturing. For more details about the careers of these honorees, see the September 15 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.
