The Mount Vernon High School junior varsity cheerleading squad attended the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) Summer Camp at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio on July 21 to July 25 and received three superior ratings and blue ribbons.

Late sign-ups for the Franklin County Youth Football program are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 8 at the football practice field on the south side of the school. All football participants are required to attend sign-ups. Fees are due the day of the event. See the July 30 edition of the Optic-Herald for more information.

American Quarter Horse exhibitor Trent Robinson of Scroggins will be competing in the 2009 Ford American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Championship Show in Oklahoma City, July 31-Aug. 8.

Volleyball camp for girls in grades four through nine at Mount Vernon ISD is set to begin Wednesday, Aug. 12. The camp will continue through Aug. 14 in the high school gym.
