Jewel McAfee recognized at game

Jewel McAfee recognized at gameJewel DeShazo McAfee was recognized during the 2009 Saltillo homecoming ceremonies on Friday, Jan. 30 at the school. She was recognized as the only surviving member of the 1929 Hopkins County Championship basketball team that won the first trophy for Saltillo ISD.

Mrs. McAfee was greeted with a warm standing ovation by the crowd at halftime of the games and as she took center floor she was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Kerry Garmon. She is the only surviving member of that 1929 team, and she will be celebrating her 95th birthday in March.  Other members of the 1929 Lady Lions team were Goldie Swinford, Evelyn Roberts, Faye Crauley, Tessie Mae Ross, Euna Lee Woolsey, Cleo Smith, Helen Burns, and Lera Henry.
