Rodeo titles to be award this weekend
Eighteen girls seek four titles in the Sheriff’s Posse queen and princess contests. See the Rodeo special section in the Sept. 2 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more information on each contestant.
Burning ban remains in effect
The ban on outdoor burning issued last week remains in effect despite localized rains received Monday evening. The initial order banning outdoor burning was issued at the Monday, Aug. 23 meeting of the Franklin County Commissioners Court.
Kirby to perform
Hannah Kirby will be the featured performer at noon Saturday, Sept. 4 on the downtown plaza as a part of the annual rodeo festivities.
Lounge Lizards to be featured at gala
The Austin Lounge Lizards will provide entertainment for the 2010 Mount Vernon Music Gala season opening fund-raiser event. The gala will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday Aug. 28 in the Mount Vernon Music Hall at 402 Leftwich St.
High traffic
It appears that Mount Vernon Elementary School was not the only location in town that caused a traffic jam last week. A number of Hummingbirds stack on each other at the Redar residence on CR 2100 last week for their chance at a drink of sugar water from the bird feeder.<...
United Way benefit fish-fry Saturday
The United Way of Franklin County will provide an all-you-can-eat catfish dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4.
Spike
Juliegh Ragsdale spikes the volleyball across the net for the Lady Tigers. She was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Redwater Tournament Aug. 27-28.
Tigers go to Jefferson
The Mount Vernon Tigers will travel to Jefferson to face the Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
Homecoming Parade Monday
The annual Homecoming Parade and Pep Rally in downtown Mount Vernon is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6.
Area new staff
Area schools including Saltillo, Sulphur Bluff, and Winfield ISD, have introduced their new teachers for the 2010-11 school year.
