“Fight for Gene” event downtown Saturday

Lisa and Gene MaplesA fund raising event to support Gene Maples in his third fight with cancer will be Saturday, November 7 in downtown Mount Vernon. The event will begin at 1 p.m. with family friendly fun.

Angel Gift applications available, process changed

Applications for families needing Angel Gift assistance are available from the principals’ offices at the elementary school campus, as well as at the Mount Vernon Head Start center’s office.

Call to avoid delays in blood donation

Area residents are asked to help save lives by giving blood. Time slots are now being reserved for the Carter BloodCare blood drive at the church of Christ from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, November 7.

Bouma, Evans speakers for salute to veterans Nov. 7

Two retired decorated veterans, Lt. Col. Andrew Bouma, U.S. Air Force, and Master Sgt. Lamar Evans, U.S. Army, will be featured speakers for the fifth annual community wide Veterans Salute program.

Trick-or-Treat on the square Friday

The annual Trick-or-Treat Around the Square will be Friday, October 30 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. There will be candy stops at the Trick-or-Treat Around the Square event and numerous trick-or-trunk stops around the plaza.

Motivational scholarship costs rising

With expenses projected to be $44,000 by the end of 2015  alone, the Mount Vernon Rotary Club is hoping for exceptional community support for its motivational scholarship fund raising dinner.

Participants are being sought for the annual “Walk Across Texas” get fit event through the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Registration will take place over the next 10 days.
