Contractor registration proposed

A proposal to have contractors working on Franklin County Water District lease-back property register with the district is up for further discussion at next week’s board meeting.

Aden, Currys, Monroe, Reeves honored for support

Rev. Dr. LaVelle Hendricks, Susan Reeves, Barbara Monroe, Libby Aden, and Verna and Bishop CurryBlack History Month was celebrated highlighting the Golden Jubilee of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The sponsoring Black Onyx Club honored five people for their service and support of the black community in Franklin County.

Over 6,700 clients served by food bank

The Community Food Bank of Franklin County served 6,706 clients in 2013 with a total of 125,123 pounds of food distributed to those in need. The group’s income was down and their expenses were up.

Bingo set to begin on Valentines

The Hope for Housing organization, a charitable group based in Pittsburg, will open Charitable Bingo on Friday, February 14. The door will open at 4 p.m. and Bingo will start at 6 p.m.

Greg Carr Honored

Greg Carr, June Carr Newsom, and sister, Lynn OverstreetGregg Carr was honored by the Mount Vernon Housing Authority with a reception on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Mr. Carr was presented with a plaque and a gold watch for 35 years of service on the board, many as chairman.

Canoeing fun for Scouts

Thirteen boys and six adult leaders took the trip.

Banquet tickets available; nomination deadline Friday

Tickets for the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet are now available at the Chamber office on Kaufman St., Brookshire’s, First National Bank, and Guaranty Bond Bank. The tickets are $25 per person.

Program growing from first grade to age 21 for area youth

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) programs involve more than 100 youth and adult leaders in Franklin County. That is an annual increase of about 10 percent over the past two years.

Franklin County Library during the month of February will be offered “blind dates” with books. Readers visiting Franklin County Library during the month of February will be offered “blind dates” with books. Like a true blind date, readers who check out a special “blind date” book won’t know the title or author of their book.
