NETO Spaghetti dinner fund raiser successful

Jy’Mon Hatcher, age three, told his Grandma Darlene Hatcher that his spaghetti dinner was “Mmm Good.”Jy’Mon Hatcher, age three, told his Grandma Darlene Hatcher that his spaghetti dinner was “Mmm Good.” The dinner brought in $1,270 for the Meals on Wheels program with just under $300 of the total coming from the cake and pie sale.

Mount Vernon FFA fruit and meat sale underway until October 10

The annual Mount Vernon FFA fruit and meat sale is currently underway. Anyone interested in ordering fruit or meat should contact any local FFA member or the agriculture departement at the school at (903) 537-4781. For more information, see the Sept. 26 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.

Food bank serves over 4,000 clients this year

The Community Food Bank of Franklin County has served 4,162 clients so far this year with more than 76,361 pounds of food given to those in need. The food bank has brought in a total income of $29,746.21 through the end of August 2013.

Registration open for CountryFest Stew Contest

The Franklin County Chamber of Commerce 29th annual CountryFest Stew Cook-off is set for Saturday, October 12. The contest will be located on Houston St. again this year.

Rain unable to wash away the spirit of rodeo

Chris Chandler, complete with his handle bar mustache and goatee, trys his hand at wresting a steer at the annual Handicapable Rodeo on Friday, Sept. 20 at Duke Arena. He is assisted with his efforts by Stephanie Stewart.Approximately 700 participants made their trek in the rain to attend the 11th annual Handicapable Rodeo on Friday, September 20 at the Duke Arena on CR 3285 in Franklin County.

Benefit set for Greg Carr, auction items sought

A benefit for Greg Carr has been organized for Saturday, September 28 at 4 p.m. at the Hagansport Community Center. Items are now being sought to be offered in an auction the night of the event.

Rotary Bingo canceled

The annual Rotary Bingo for scholarships set for Saturday, October 5 has been canceled according to President Diana Duckworth. In lieu of this event, the club will sponsor a 75th anniversary scholarship dinner on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Gator hunting

Austin Decker, son of Adam and Tracie Decker of Mount Vernon, won an alligator youth hunt through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.Austin Decker, son of Adam and Tracie Decker of Mount Vernon, won an alligator youth hunt through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.  He is a 16 year old sophomore at Mount Vernon High School.
