Deadline approaching for holiday military mailings

The deadlines to mail packages to military addresses for the holidays are fast approaching. Individuals wishing to send space available mail or packages that are sent overseas by air should postmark their packages no later than Tuesday, November 26. Angel Trees to serve two different groups of children

Franklin County Child Welfare Board and the Community In Schools program will have separate Angel Tree programs to provide needed items for local children at Christmas.

Food collections, sign-ups continue

The organizing and collecting of non-perishable food items for the 2013 Christmas for All Food Baskets continues through the first week in December. The Mount Vernon American Legion Post 243 began its collection of food items through their Bingo sessions last week.

Christmas parade set, vendor booths available

Halloween is over, Thanksgiving is around the corner, and planning for the annual Christmas parade has commenced. The date has been set for Saturday, December 7 with the parade beginning at 11 a.m.

Chili competition sign ups underway

Registration for the fifth annual chili cook off as part of the annual Christmas Festival on Saturday, December 7 in downtown Mount Vernon is underway. All proceeds from the cook off will be donated to the Community Food Bank of Franklin County.

Wallace is speaker

Pastor Jack WallacePastor Jack Wallace took time to honor each veteran attending at the Veteran’s Day Program in the school auditorium on Monday, November 11. He also spoke on his personal encounters as a member of the United States Navy for 20 years. Following the program, a lunch was served for those attending in the media center at the high school.

NETO fund raiser

Members of the Community Center conducted the event to raise money for the NETO Meal Center. More than $2,400 was raised.

Simmons Award at annual Veterans Dinner tonight

The 14th Annual Veterans Dinner and presentation of the Jake Simmons Freedom Award is set for tonight Thursday, November 14. The event will get under way at 6 p.m. with a dinner at the Mount Pleasant Country Club.
