Lavender reminds voters to get photo identification

State Representative Dist. 1 George Lavender reminds voters that photo identification will now be required for voting in person. “After much litigation, the November 5th election will be the inaugural election for photo ID,” said Rep. George Lavender.

Tax rate set, 2014 budget adopted

The Franklin County Commissioners Court unanimously adopted the 2014 Budget and then set the 2013 property tax rate at a special called meeting of the Court on Monday, September 16.

Online auction for Franklin County to start September 25

Franklin County is starting an online auction September 25 to sell surplus items owned by the county and items seized by the Sheriff’s Department. The auction will end at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 16. For more information, see the September 19 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.

Golf cart, alcohol variance discussions to continue

Whether or not to allow the operation of golf carts on Mount Vernon streets and adjustments to the beer and wine ordinance in the central  business district are expected to be back on the agenda for the Monday, September 23 meeting of the Mount Vernon City Council.

TxDOT announces free child safety seat inspection

In an effort to help Texas drivers keep their child passengers properly secured, the Texas Department of Transportation announced it is offering free, year-round child safety seat inspections conducted by certified technicians.

Local hospital re-designated as a Level IV trauma center

ETMC Mount Vernon has been re-designated a Level IV trauma center by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The hospital originally received this designation in 1998.

Hotel Ocupancy Tax 2014 funding applications sought

The Franklin County Commissioners adopted an annual budgeting process for the Hotel/Motel Occupancy Tax. All of the funding for the coming year, 2014, will be reviewed together.
