Local volunteer fire departments are now required to apply for training grants available through the Texas Forestry Service. Members of the Franklin County Commissioners Court made the application mandatory at their Monday, May 13 meeting. The grants pay for tuition to the training schools conducted at A&M University at their main campus near Bryan. The amount of the grants varies from $500 to $600 per firefighter depending upon the training classes taken. For more details, see the May 16 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.
