School board hears update on work of Tess the therapy dog

School board member Richard Carr visits with Tess prior to Monday’s board meeting.

Members of the Mount Vernon School Board received an update on the utilization of Tess the therapy dog during the group’s April meeting. The black Lab joined the “staff” at Mount Vernon Elementary in January. Since that time, she has worked with special needs students, helped with guidance lessons, assisted in counseling in both group and individual settings, had a calming effect on students with emotional outbursts, and has been used as a reward for students’ good behavior.
