Evelyn Lenore Gatlin, age 82, of Mount Vernon, passed away in the mid-morning hours of Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana.
Evelyn was born on March 26, 1932 in Empress, Alberta, Canada to the late Tom and Freda Klippert Hern. She graduated high school from the Empress Community School and became a Registered Nurse after graduating from the Galt School of Nursing. Later she received her Bachelors of Science and Hospital Administration Degree in California.
Evelyn married the love of her life and best friend, James Allen Gatlin, Sr. on April 24, 1956 in Empress, Alberta, Canada. Together they have spent the next 58 years raising a family and living a lifetime of memories. Evelyn was a longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene but recently had been attending the First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon. She was attending the Gleaners Sunday School Class where she had made so many friends and connections since moving to Mount Vernon.
Evelyn will be remembered as a Godly woman who loved the Lord and loved her family. Her loving touch, sweet smile, and caring soul will be missed by all who knew her.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, James Gatlin; one son, Bruce Gatlin, and wife Kim, of Denton, TX; two daughters, Beverly Gatlin of Oklahoma City, OK and Brenda Gatlin of Grapevine, TX; four grandsons, Tucker Gatlin, Caleb Gatlin, Dylan Lackey, and Chad Lackey; one brother, Kenneth Hern of Alberta, Canada; and by one sister, Verna Hern-Shipley of Saskatchewan, Canada. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Edna Hern-Cox.
Funeral services for Evelyn Gatlin were at 12:00 P.M., Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Sam B. Harvey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon with Brother Pepper
Puryear officiating. Burial followed at Mount Vernon City Cemetery
with grandsons Tucker, Caleb, Dylan, and Chad serving as pallbearers.
