Martha Edwards Cates, 81 of Bridges Chapel Community north of Mount Pleasant died Monday, April 14, 2014. She was laid to rest beside her husband and daughter on Thursday, April 17, 2014.
Mrs. Cates was born December 10, 1932 to Albert and Pauline Sinclair Edwards. She married her husband, Wayne Cates, in 1951. Since 1967 Martha was a member of the Bridges Chapel United Methodist Church where she served on several boards and offices. She taught children’s Sunday School for 26 years. Martha enjoyed quilting, baby-sitting, and creating crafts for the Bridges Chapel United Methodist Church Bazaar. She also enjoyed traveling to Branson with her sisters and playing Canasta.
She is survived by five sisters and three brother-in- laws, Mary Jo Holmes, Barbara and Jim Alford, and Edna Hunnicutt, all of Mount Vernon, and Shirley and Donnie Moore and Linda and Larry Sansom, all of Garland and one brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Ann Edwards of Mount Pleasant. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cates is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Wayne Cates; her parents, and a
daughter, Betty Joyce Cates. Interment for Mrs. Cates was at Bridges Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Her nephews served as pallbearers. Memorials
may be made to Bridges Chapel United Methodist Church or Heart to Heart Hospice.
