Funeral services for Richard “Daulton” Swanner, age 88 of Winnsboro, were at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Winnsboro with Bro. Larry Ramsour and Bro. Earl Duggins officiating.
Mr. Swanner was born in 1923 to Jesse and Emma Alston Swanner of Scroggins. He married Loveta Lester. During World War II, he served as an Army Combat Infantryman, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. He saw action in the Battle of the Bulge, Ardennes Forest, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. After the war, he returned to Texas A&M University - Commerce where he graduated in 1945. He was co-owner of Community Grocery in Winnsboro, he was an operator for Getty Oil Company and was the Postmaster in Scroggins where he retired in 1984. He served on the Winnsboro School Board for three terms and was chairman of the board from 1970-76. He was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Winnsboro Bank and Trust and was chairman from 1982-1997. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Winnsboro where he served as a deacon and Sunday School General Secretary.
He died Wednesday, June 8. He was preceded in death by his wife.
He is survived by three sons and their spouses, Lynn and Linda Swanner of Winnsboro, Ronnie and Sallieann Swanner of San Antonio, and Rickey and Melody Swanner of Winnsboro; six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Darren Swanner, Kyle Swanner, John Swanner, Jack Kemp, Gaylon Moore, Arturo Arteaga, Chuck Cone, and Justin Kepfler. Doyle Taylor served as an honorary pallbearer.
