Charley Hopper

Funeral services for Charley Hopper, age 79 of Emory, formerly of Mount Vernon, were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012 at Harvey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in the Mount Vernon City Cemetery with Rev. Jack Wallace officiating.
Mr. Hopper was born Aug. 20, 1932 in Borger, Tex., to Charles A. Hopper and Dane Covington. He married Bobbie Hopper in 1952 who preceded him in death. He married Lupe Marie Smith in 2003.. He was a First Lt. in the United States Army, he taught school for 37 years at Mount Vernon ISD and at Detroit ISD. At MVISD, Coach Hopper was instrumental in helping girls athletics grow in track and basketball, and working with boys and girls cross country from 1979 through 1992. For many years, MVISD conducted Hopper Relays in his honor.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Lion’s Club, and the First United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon and Detroit. He received his master’s degree from East Texas State University.
He died Friday, Jan. 6 in Sulphur Springs. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, and four sisters, Mae Hildred, Thelma, Rosalie, and Shirley.
He is survived by his wife, Lupe Marie Hopper of Emory; four children, Kathy Hopper of Conroe, Karen Fry of Mount Vernon, Kennie Prater of Coppell, and Charley Hopper, II, of Cleveland; three grandchildren, Jason Archer of Wichita Falls, Erin Reynold of Plano, and Jennifer Fry of Irving; two great-grandchildren, Emma Archer and Graham Archer; and a brother, Glen Hopper of Willis.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Legacy Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Charley Hopper made the world a better place and was always positive and brought sunshine into wherever he was. He will be missed. May God bless the family with extra grace.
