Retired Dallas fireman Gary Dennis Ovard suffered an apparent heart attack and became the first fatality to occur during the eight year existence of the Tour de Cypress event. Funeral services for Mr. Ovard were conducted Wednesday, April 25, at the First United Methodist Church of Quitman with Dr. Dick White officiating.
Mr. Ovard was a Christian and a practicing Methodist. He was the owner of Gutter Helmet of Northeast Texas, and established Gary Ovard Remodeling in 1968.
He was born April 1, 1947, the son of August and Lilah Oetzman Ovard in Reedsburg, WI. He was a 1967 graduate of North Texas State University.
Mr. Ovard is survived by his wife, Marlene; two sons, Blake Ovard and Christopher Ovard; a step-son, Cary Brandt; a daughter, Contessa Tejeda; a step-daughter, Kelly Carden; two brothers, John and Mark Ovard; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
