Memorial services for Ron McCown age 68 of Canton, were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at the Main Street Baptist Church in Grand Saline with Rev. Jimmy Jones officiating.
Mr. McCown was born Feb. 12, 1944 in Winnsboro to Ira Aubert McCown and Edna Alene Dickens McCown. He was raised in rural Wood County and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1962. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during Vietnam. He married Sharon Kay Driskell in Winnsboro on Sept. 10, 1966. In 1968, he graduated from East Texas State University in Commerce with a masters degree. He was employed as a teacher with Winnsboro I.S.D. for two years, Grand Saline I.S.D. for seventeen years and Tyler I.S.D. for two and a half years, retiring in 2006. He also did missionary work in Mexico for three years and was pastor for Oakland Baptist Church for six and a half years and pastor at Cobb Baptist Church near Wills Point for the past fourteen years.
He died Tuesday, Jan. 22. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, LaQueta Coe Lamm and a brother, John Wayne McCown.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Kay McCown of Canton; three sons and their wives, Clint Webb and Annell Spencer of Garland, Charles Ivan Spencer of Wake Forest, N. C., and Michael Kelly and Shannon McCown of Fruitvale; a daughter and son-in-law, Crystal Erin McCown and Walter Perez of Gresham; and 11 grandchildren.
