Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples was in Mount Vernon on Wednesday, July 16. He presented representatives of the local community with the certificate recognizing Franklin County as a Go Texan Certified Retirement Community (CRC). Get the full story in this week’s Optic-Herald.




Caldwell Zoo program Tuesday
Members of the staff of the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler will be at the Franklin County Library at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29.
The staff will bring a few critters from the zoo to show and discuss.
Members of the community of all ages are encouraged to attend the event. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin County Library.


New lake record
New lake record John Taylor of Hagansport caught the new lake record Blue Catfish on Lake Cypress Springs on Tuesday, June 24. The fish weighed 63 lbs., was 49 inches long and had a girth of 32 inches. He caught the fish on a trotline. It is the biggest fish record on Lake Cypress Springs.


City to purify waterlines
Those who receive water from the City of Mount Vernon may expected to detect a strong chlorine smell and or discolored water from the "system purification process" city personnel will be doing for the next month (July 17 through about Aug. 15). The flushing will be done after 10 p.m. each night in various sections of the city. [Read the rest..]



Mrs. Texas Globe
Mrs. Texas Globe Lea Arnold Carroll, formerly of Mount Vernon, was recently named Mrs. Texas Globe by the Women In Need Foundation (WIN). She will represent the State of Texas at an annual pageant in Palm Springs in August. Get the full story in this week’s Optic-Herald.


Grant Butler
Grant Butler received a head wound on Sunday, July 20, in an altercation. He was taken by care flight to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. He was kept sedated throughout Monday. As of noon on Tuesday, Mr. Butler had regained consciouness and was sitting up. He recognized family members and was able to have conversation with them. At that time, he had no memory of the incident. Mr. Butler will remain in ICU.
Update
Mr. Butler is still in ICU as of Wednesday, July 23. He has been sitting up in a chair, and with help was able to walk around the nurse’s desk. There is no indication of hearing or sight problems at this time. He still has no memory of the incident.
