Bond to be guest speaker

Texas Ranger Ken Bond will be the guest speaker at the Franklin County American Association of Retired Persons Chapter 3703 meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 24 at the Senior Citizens Center. Alzheimer Support Group to meet locally

The Alzheimer Support Group for Mount Vernon area will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 in the parlor at Mission Manor Nursing Home at 501 Yates St. Caregivers, families, and friends are encouraged to attend the event to learn ways to deal with Alzheimers. The deadline for hay samples to be analyzed for the 2013 Mount Vernon / Saltillo Young Farmers Association Hay Show on Saturday, October 5 is Friday, September 20.

Scout rally Tuesday, September 10

The annual School Night Rally to sign-up new recruits for Boy Scout troops and Cub Scout dens has been set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 at the Mount Vernon Elementary School Cafetorium. For more information about the Scouts, see the Sept. 5 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.

Survivors retreat set

The ETMC Breast Care Center is holding a free, one-day retreat for breast cancer survivors on Friday, Oct. 4. The event features Shakha Stephens, a certified laughter yoga teacher and staff chaplain at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Twelve branches combine for multi-family reunion

Twelve family branches will join together for a multi-family reunion at the Hagansport Community Center on Saturday, Sept. 21. The reunion is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m followed by an 80th birthday reception for Martha Hare from 2-4 p.m.
