A reverse icicle

Frozen water shoots up from an ice tray in the freezer at the Optic-Herald office.Frozen water shoots up from an ice tray in the freezer at the Optic-Herald office.

Here is Mount Vernon High School science teacher Jenna Wilkins’ explanation of the occurrence. “Water expands when it freezes. As it freezes, the expanding ice under the surface forces the remaining water up through a little hole and it freezes around the edge forming a spike. Like a reverse icicle!”
