Seniors receive Heritage Scholarships at banquet

Takeitra Fountain, Ja’Myra Fountain and Jakayda Fountain were awarded Heritage Scholarships at the annual Black Onyx Club banquet. Krista Jackson, left and Ty’Rese Linwood (not pictured) were also honored as graduating seniors. Two Mount Vernon High School graduating seniors and one college student were awarded Heritage Scholarships during the Black Onyx Club’s annual banquet on Friday, June 8, at the Cultural Arts Center.

Heritage scholarship dinner Friday

The 11th annual Heritage Scholarship Banquet, honoring the black heritage graduates of the 2018 Mount Vernon High School graduating class and those currently in college, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 8, in the Cultural Arts Center, 100 Rusk St., two blocks west of the Courthouse.

Billings named Teacher of the Year

Robin BillingsRobin Billings, a 2002 graduate of Mount Vernon High School, was recently named “Electives Teacher of the Year” by her peers and co-workers at Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas.

Lamar Award

Mount Vernon High School seniors Lindsey Radford-Sims and Mason Huddleston were presented with the Mirabeau B. Destiny BarronDestiny Barron, a Mount Vernon Junior FFA and Franklin County 4-H Club member, won first place in Fitting/Grooming/Trimming and ninth place in Showmanship at McPeak’s Be A Champ Show Cow Camp.
