Music scholarships

Alyssa Leuzinger of Sulphur Springs, Tatianna Mathis of Texarkana, Abby and Sarah Phillips of Gilmer, and Isabella and Jameson Gaertner of Mount Pleasant. They were joined by MVM performers Monica Pegis, Mark and Ute Miller, Jeff Hood and Jolyon Pegis. Not shown are Daniel, Joshua, and Miriam Bennett of Texarkana, Randi Brannan of Mineola, Seth Carter and Iyanla Hawkins of Paris, Jace Muniz of Sulphur Springs, Alyssa Reynolds of Mount Pleasant, and Greylyn Tidwell of Wake Village.The Mount Vernon Music Association awarded the Betty Whitlock Memorial Scholarships to 15 young singers and instrumentalists on Sunday, May 21.

Heritage scholarship dinner Friday

The tenth annual Heritage Scholarship Banquet, honoring the black heritage graduates of the 2017 Mount Vernon High School graduating class and those currently in college, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 9 in the Cultural Arts Center, 100 Rusk St.

McCamant, Dunavant, Risner tops in journal writing contest

Winners in the Civil War Journal contest were front row, left to right, Milo McCamant,  Katelyn Dunavant, Ben Risner, second row, Rynn Gamblin, Jonathan Chitsey,  Bobby Coffman, Cameron Foster, Madison Pham, and  and Kyla Wade.Milo McCamant, Katelyn Dunavant, and Benjamin Risner were the top place finishers and claimed $450 in cash prizes in the 19th Civil War Journal Writing Contest for Mount Vernon ISD seventh grade students.
