Bales retiring

Claudia BalesA retirement reception for Claudia Bales will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, December 15 in the lobby at the United States Post Office in Talco. Mrs. Bales is retiring from the USPS after 31 years of service. She began as a postal sub in 1982 and became a full time employee in 2006.

HOME applications now being accepted

The City of Mount Vernon is accepting applications for  the third round of assistance for the replacement of substandard housing. The assistance is in the form of a grant or a deferred forgivable loan.

Route set for Saturday’s annual Christmas Parade

The route for the 74th annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 7 was announced this week. All parade entries are asked to report to parade coordinators no later than 10 a.m. for lineup instructions at the intersection of Kaufman and Jackson streets just north of the courthouse.

“Christmas Store” in need of clothing

The Christmas Store sponsored by the Communities in School program is still in need of clothing for elementary age students, pre-kindergarten through fourth grade.

Kearney returns from wagon train trip

Billy Wayne Cowley, Si Robertson, and Bob KearneyBob Kearney of Saltillo recently returned from his fifth annual Wagon Train Ride for Saltillo. Along his trail, he received close to $500 for the Saltillo FCCLA and Saltillo ISD Relay for Life teams.

Fun at the ice rink

Her friends Liz Etheridge, Maaike Plantinga, and Cheryl Hood did everything they could to keep her upright.  A total of 400 people visited the rink Thursday through Sunday last week.

Deadline is Thursday, December 5 for Christmas food baskets

The deadline to apply for food assistance in the Christmas For All program is today, Thursday, December 5. Applications are available from 4 to 5:30 p.m. only at the Community Food Bank of Franklin County.

E-books available soon at Franklin County Library

Just in time for Christmas, the Franklin County Library will have e-books available starting Sunday, December 1. Anyone interested in taking advantage of the e-book program must have a current library card and must visit the library to establish an e-book account.
