Animal shelter donation

Skelton, Stephens, Medina tops in Civil War Journals

Winners in the Civil War Journal contest were front row, left to right, Brayden Skelton,  Anna Stephens, Isabella Medina, second row, Quin Barrentine, Betsy Tovar,  Tanner McCoy, Ian Davidson, Dallas J. Bryan, and Nicole Morales.Brayden Skelton, Anna Stephens and Isabella Medina were the top place finishers and claimed $700 in cash prizes in the 20th Civil War Journal Writing Contest for Mount Vernon ISD’s seventh grade students.

Carry the Load helps those who serve the people

Franklin Co. GW Doyle Brown and Titus Co. GW Jerry Ash and other  locals escort the Carry the Load group into downtown Mount Vernon. The seventh annual Carry the Load walk from West Point Cemetery in New York state to Reverchon Park in Dallas by Memorial Day trekked through Mount Vernon and Franklin County along the Bankhead Highway, now Main St., in the early evening hours of Friday, May 25.

Memorial Day service Monday

The Mount Vernon American Legion Post 243 will sponsor a Memorial Day service at noon  Monday, May 28. Members of the community are invited to attend.

Library friends to provide petting zoo

The Friends of the Franklin County Library will sponsor a petting zoo to kick off the summer enrichment series of activities. It will open at 10 a.m. on the downtown plaza tomorrow, Friday, June 1.

Historic buildings tour to spark imaginations

Members of the Mount Vernon Main Street Association will be hosts for an “Imagine the Possibilities” tour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Saturday, May 26.
