The number of children in the Mount Vernon School system requesting meals for weekends has more than tripled since last year, according to Marie Latortue, coordinator for the Mount Vernon Rotary Back pack program.
“The increased numbers mean a parallel increase in cost,” Mrs. Latortue said. “Our total funds for the entire year will not even cover half the cost of the program at the current rate.” The group is facing a $7,000 to $8,000 shortfall, just to get to the end of the school year. The numbers fall off after that. They desperately need donations to continue this vital program. Checks should be made payable to Rotary Back Packs and mailed to P. O. Box 572, Mount Vernon, TX 75457. For more details, see the October 10 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.
