Child safe zones re-establishes by city

Child Safe Zones of 1,000 feet around any area where children normally congregate were established Monday evening by the Mount Vernon City Council after legislation that went into effect September 1 gave smaller General Law cities the right to do so.

The ordinance makes it unlawful for a “Registered Sex Offender” to go in, on, or within 1,000 feet of any Child Safety Zone (CSZ). The term includes a school, day-care facility, playground, public or private youth center, public swimming pool, video arcade facility, or other facility that regularly holds events primarily for children. The term does not include a church. See the September 14 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more from this story.
