City tax rate down from 2012

A property tax rate of $.604382 per $100 of property value is being proposed by the Mount Vernon City Council for 2013. The city’s proposed 2013-14 operating budget combines general and utility funds of $6.3 million with expenses of $6.2 million.

City council members to be elected by place system

Members of the Mount Vernon City Council will now be elected by the place system. The current council unanimously voted for the ordinance putting the new system in place at their regular monthly meeting Monday.

ID now mandatory for voting

Voters are now required to present an approved form of photo identification in order to vote in all Texas Elections. This requirement is effective immediately.

Building facade grants recommended

Two building facade grants valued at $500 each are being recommended to the Mount Vernon City Council for approval at their Aug. 12 meeting. Each of the projects represents improvement of from $1,000 to $2,000 on two downtown structures.
