Council votes down five cent property tax hike

Members of the Mount Vernon City Council unanimously voted down a property tax hike of five cents, formally approved water/sewer increases, and pledged to pursue other avenues to fund street and gutter repairs.

The elimination of that five cent increase reduced the 2017-18 projected revenues by $50,000, which was earmarked for street improvements. See the Aug. 17 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more details from the City Council meeting.
