Budget, tax rate adopted amid vocal taxpayer opposition

Billy Lay, a homeowner on Lake Bob Sandlin in Franklin County, addressed members of the Franklin County Commissioner’s Court during a public hearing Monday, September 10.A handful of vocal citizens returned to ask questions and make known their displeasure in increasing tax bills at the final public hearing and subsequent adoption of the proposed 2019 budget and 2018 property tax rate.

The only substantial changes made were in the $5.3 million general fund budget where the 3.89 percent increase over last year’s budget will cost a $100,000 home owner an additional $5.76 in property taxes this year. See the Sept. 13 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more on the discussion from the Franklin County Commissioner’s Court meeting.
