Vietnam War veterans will be honored in a brief ceremony on the plaza in downtown Mount Vernon at 1 p.m. Friday, March 30. The Vietnam War was so unpopular that veterans were often met with indifference and even open hostility when they returned home after serving their country. In an attempt to rectify those unfortunate events, the U.S. Congress in 2011 passed a resolution to observe Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day on March 30. The local event will also celebrate the end of the war 39 years ago. For more details about the event, see the March 29 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.
