Refinancing plan, tax rate, budget, approved

Members of the Mount Vernon ISD Board of Trustees were unified in proposing the 2016-17 budget, the tax rate and moving forward in refunding the district’s bond debt in their meeting on Monday, August 8.

Meet the Teacher dates set, area classes resume

Classes will resume at area schools soon. Mount Vernon, Sulphur Bluff, and Winfield will start Monday, August 22 and Saltillo students will return Tuesday, August 23.

Band preparing to march into action

The Mount Vernon Mighty Tiger Marching Band is preparing to march into action for the 2016 season. New Marcher introduction will start July 27 and Band Camp will begin August 1. See the July 21 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more details.

Meet the Tigers this weekend

The annual Meet the Tigers celebration is set for Saturday, August 13 beginning at 10:30 a.m. The event will be in the Mall area outside the high school gym and will provide a look at  Mount Vernon High School UIL participants for the fall season.

Barry A. Baker and Jason GloverThere have been several changes in administrative positions at Mount Vernon ISD this summer. Barry A. Baker and Jason Glover have been hired as the high school principal and assistant principal, respectively.

School considers refunding 2009 bond for lower rates

Mount Vernon ISD is considering refunding (refinancing) the $20.5 million bond payments originally approved in 2009. The move would save the district just over $100,000 per year for the remaining 13 years of payments.

Weiss proposes two cent tax increase

Superintendent Gregg Weiss recommended that the Board of Trustees for Mount Vernon ISD consider a total tax ordinance of $1.2689 for the 2016-17 school year during a meeting on Thursday, July 28.
