A memorial service for Jack V. Mattingly, age 69 of Edgewood, was at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Edgewood with Rev. Jim Ballard officiating.
He was born Sept. 23, 1940, in Yorktown, Tex., the son of Virgil H. Mattingly and Ruby Nelle Kearley Mattingly. In 1959, he graduated from Samuell High School in Dallas. He married Jane Ellen Lowry in Dallas on Nov. 28, 1963. He worked various jobs from the time he was fourteen years old and earned his bachelors, masters, and doctor of education degree on May 13, 1978 from East Texas State University.
He taught the advanced math and computer classes and tutored kids who had difficulty in their schoolwork and personal lives. He enjoyed going hunting in the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado, and cooking over the campfire in Dutch ovens. He died Monday, July 5 at his home in Edgewood. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Joe Pat. He is survived by his wife, Jane; two sons, Craig and Chris and their wives, Amy and Jennifer; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, two sisters, Janell and Joy; and distant cousins, Lela Mattingly Jordan Roberts, Billy and Veronica Jordan, all of Mount Vernon, and Bob Mattingly and Gertrude Banks, both of Winnsboro. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hospice of East Texas, Horsefeathers Therapeutic Equestrian Center, or the Humane Society of your choice.
